Sometimes You can get “ORA-29760: instance_number parameter not specified ” error.

Details of error are as follows.
ORA-29760: instance_number parameter not specified Cause: The init.ora file did not contain a value for the instance_number which is required to identify this instance to other instances of the database running on the same cluster Action: Assign a value to the instance_number parameter in the init.ora parameter file SQL> startup ORA-29760: instance_number parameter not specified

This ORA-29760: instance_number parameter not specified error is mostly seen conversion of Single Instance to Oracle RAC. So If you got this error during RAC conversion, then firstly check your INSTANCE_NAME.
Check the Oracle SID, if it is wrong, then fix it and try again.
[oracle@msdbadm01 ~]$ echo $ORACLE_SID msdb [oracle@msdbadm01 ~]$
Instance name should be msdb1 , change it and try again.
[oracle@msdbadm01 ~]$ export ORACLE_SID=msdb1 [oracle@msdbadm01 ~]$ sqlplus / as sysdba SQL*Plus: Release 12.1.0.2.0 Production on Sun Apr 23 00:18:05 2015 Connected to an idle instance.
