ORA-01589: must use RESETLOGS or NORESETLOGS option for database open

I got ” ORA-01589: must use RESETLOGS or NORESETLOGS option for database open”  error in Oracle database.

Details of error are as follows.

ORA-01589: Must use RESETLOGS or NORESETLOGS option for database open

Cause: Either incomplete or backup control file recovery has been performed. After these types
 of recovery you must specify either the RESETLOGS option or the NORESETLOGS option to open your database.

Action: Specify the appropriate option

SQL> startup
ORACLE instance started.
Total System Global Area 4821853168 bytes
Fixed Size     2925024 bytes
Variable Size 2056968224 bytes
Database Buffers   870425344 bytes
Redo Buffers   23848576 bytes
Database mounted.

Must use RESETLOGS or NORESETLOGS option for database open

This ORA-01589 error is related with the Either incomplete or backup control file recovery has been performed. After these types of recovery you must specify either the RESETLOGS option or the NORESETLOGS option to open your database.

To solve this error, you need to recover database, then open database with RESETLOGS option as follows.

SQL> shutdown immediate;


SQL> startup mount;

RMAN> recover database;

Once you completed the recover database, you need to open database with RESETLOGS option.

SQL> alter database open resetlogs;
