ORA-01089: immediate shutdown in progress – no operations are permitted

Hi,

Sometimes you can get ” ORA-01089: immediate shutdown in progress – no operations are permitted ” error.

Details of error are as follows.

ORA-01089: immediate shutdown in progress - no operations are permitted
Cause: The SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE command was used to shut down a running ORACLE instance, so your operations have been terminated.
Action: Wait for the instance to be restarted, or contact your DBA.
 
ORA-01089: immediate shutdown or close in progress – no operations are permitted
ORA-01089: immediate shutdown or close in progress – no operations are permitted


This errors means Oracle Instance is hang and shutdown process was still in progress, so run shutdown abort command, then start it up again.

Check the Oracle SID and Oracle Home, if they are Ok or not ?

[oracle@MSDBdbadm01:/home/oracle:> ORACLE_SID=INSTANCE_NAME

[oracle@MSDBdbadm01:/home/oracle:> export ORACLE_SID

[oracle@MSDBdbadm01:/home/oracle:> export ORACLE_HOME=/u01/app/product/12.2.0/dbhome_1

[oracle@MSDBdbadm01:/home/oracle:> sqlplus / as sysdba

shutdown abort the Instance then start it up again as follows. Once instance is started up, run shutdown immediate and startup again.

SQL> shutdown abort
SQL> startup
SQL> shutdown immediate
SQL> startup
